Relieving Painful Bunions
Bunions—bony bumps on the inside of the foot, at the base of the big toe—are more than a cosmetic issue. This common foot problem interferes with a normal, healthy stride, which can lead to a chain reaction of injuries from the foot all the way to the hip if left untreated. Once a bunion forms, surgery is usually the only way to get rid of it; however, the right treatments can relieve pain and allow for normal movements, helping to postpone or avoid surgery.
What causes bunions?
There’s no single known cause for bunions, nor do we know why some people get them and some don’t, despite similar activity and footwear habits. We do know that the following can lead to bunions or make them worse:
- Wearing shoes that are too narrow
- Frequently wearing high heels
- Overpronation (foot rolls excessively inward with each step)
- Genetics

How to treat bunions
There are many treatment options to reduce pain and prevent bunions from getting worse. The most important thing to do is wear properly fitting shoes that are not too tight around the ball of the foot. Wearing a toe separator can also alleviate pressure on the toe joint, which can help reduce pain and inflammation. Foot strengthening exercises and stretching can also help, as can taping the foot.
The QUICK TAPE® support strap is an easy-to-use 1-piece foot tape that provides optimal arch support, helping to correct overpronation, relieve pressure on the big toe joint, and improve foot alignment to minimize risk of injury to the ankles, knees and hips. One QUICK TAPE® support strap can provide up to 7 days of support and pain relief without medication, and it can be worn with any shoe, during any activity—even in the shower!
